What Is ADAS Recalibration — and Why Your New Windshield Needs It

Updated July 23, 2026

What ADAS is

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — features like lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. On most vehicles built in the last several years, the forward-facing camera that powers these systems is mounted to the windshield, just behind the rearview mirror.

Why replacing the glass affects it

When we remove your old windshield and install a new one, that camera is disturbed — even a tiny change in its angle throws off where it thinks the road and other cars are. Recalibration re-aims and re-teaches the camera so lane-keeping stays centered and automatic braking triggers at the right moment. Skipping it means those safety systems could react late, early, or not at all.

How recalibration works

There are two types: static recalibration uses printed targets at precise distances in a controlled space, and dynamic recalibration is done by driving the car at set speeds while the system relearns. Some vehicles need one, some need both. We handle the correct procedure for your vehicle as part of the replacement.

Is it really necessary?

Yes. It's a safety requirement, not an upsell — vehicle manufacturers specify recalibration any time the windshield camera is removed or replaced. When we quote your replacement we'll tell you up front whether your car needs it, so there are no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my car has ADAS?

If you have lane-departure warning, lane-keeping, adaptive cruise control, or automatic emergency braking, you almost certainly have a windshield-mounted camera. Tell us your year/make/model and we'll confirm.

Does recalibration cost extra?

It's part of a proper replacement on ADAS-equipped vehicles and is included in your quote. We'll always tell you before the job whether your vehicle needs it.
